Dota 2 Beginner Guide 2026 — Climb From Herald to Guardian
Dota 2 has the steepest learning curve in MOBAs. 124+ heroes, 5 positions (1-5), 100+ items, lane-by-lane macro, Roshan timing, runes. The Herald-to-Guardian climb requires fixing four things: pick a position, learn last-hitting, master the 5-role system, basic warding. Drill these for 2 weeks and Guardian is automatic.
Pick one position — not all 5
Dota 2 has 5 positions: Pos 1 (Carry), Pos 2 (Mid), Pos 3 (Offlaner), Pos 4 (Soft Support), Pos 5 (Hard Support).
- Pos 5 (recommended for beginners): Wards + heals + carry babysit. Lowest gold/XP priority but easiest to learn.
- Pos 4: Roaming gank support. Mid-game playmaker.
- Pos 3 (Offlaner): 1v2 lane survival, mid-game initiator.
- Pos 2 (Mid): Snowball role, 1v1 mid for rune control.
- Pos 1 (Carry): Late-game scaling, last-hits in safe lane.
Pick one and stay for 100+ matches. Don't bounce positions — each has unique mechanics.
Last-hitting — the Herald skill gap
Last-hitting = killing creeps at 1 HP for gold. Each creep = 35-60 gold.
- Tap right-click when creep is at 1 HP for last-hit (no auto-attack).
- Deny own creep at 50% HP (right-click on your own creep) — enemy gets less XP.
- Practice in custom games or "Last Hit Trainer" workshop maps.
- Target: 50+ CS by 10 minutes for Pos 1 carry.
The 5-role system — gold + XP priority
Each position has gold/XP priority:
- Pos 1 = 1st priority. Farms freely; team protects.
- Pos 2 = 2nd priority. Mid lane solo.
- Pos 3 = 3rd priority. Offlaner survives 1v2.
- Pos 4 = 4th priority. Roams + ganks.
- Pos 5 = 5th priority. Wards + heals; lowest gold.
Don't steal Carry farm. Don't take Mid runes. Stay in your position lane.
Ward basics — where + when
Vision wins games. Pos 5 / Pos 4 buy wards:
- Observer Ward (Pos 5): Place at high ground / rune spawns / tri-bush.
- Sentry Ward (Pos 5): Counter-ward enemy invisible heroes (Pudge / Riki / Bounty Hunter).
- Place 1 Observer at lane bush at 0:00, 1 at rune spawn before 2:00.
- Reward Sentry at minute 5+ at enemy jungle entrance.
Hero pool — pick 3-5 per position
Don't learn 30 heroes. Pick 3-5 for your position:
- Pos 5 picks: Crystal Maiden, Lion, Lich, Witch Doctor, Treant Protector.
- Pos 4 picks: Pudge, Mirana, Tusk, Earth Spirit.
- Pos 3 picks: Axe, Centaur Warrunner, Tidehunter, Bristleback.
- Pos 2 picks: Invoker, Shadow Fiend, Storm Spirit, Puck.
- Pos 1 picks: Anti-Mage, Spectre, Faceless Void, Wraith King.
Lane phase basics — minute 0-15
Lane phase = 0-15 minutes. Each position has goals:
- Pos 1: Last-hit 50+ CS by 10 min. Hit level 6 for ult.
- Pos 2: Win 1v1 mid. Rune control via Bottle.
- Pos 3: Survive 1v2 lane. Don't die.
- Pos 4: Smoke gank at 5:00 with Pos 3.
- Pos 5: Ward + heal + harass enemy offlaner.
The 8 habits that get you to Guardian
- Pick 1 position; stay 100 matches.
- Master 3-5 heroes per position.
- Last-hit 50+ CS by 10 minutes.
- Buy wards every 4 minutes (Observer + Sentry).
- Smoke gank coordinated with team.
- TP Scroll in inventory after 5:00.
- Track enemy hero positions (minimap awareness).
- Don't dive without backup.
Common Herald-rank mistakes
- Bouncing positions every game
- Auto-attacking creeps instead of last-hitting
- No ward placement
- Diving without team
- Picking 20 different heroes shallow
Drill: 14-day fundamentals
- Day 1-3: Last-hit Trainer 100 reps per day. Goal: 50 CS in 10 minutes.

- Day 8-10: 5 ranked games sticking to position role.
- Day 11-14: Practice smoke gank coordination + lane phase.
